New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday has transferred the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta and also ordered an inquiry into the procurement of On-Screen Marking (OSM) services.

What is the reason?

The government took the step following widespread complaints of irregularities in the CBSE's on-screen marking system and the failure of the re-evaluation portal.

The Centre has also formed a one-member committee to investigate the procurement process for the OSM service. S. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission, will chair this one-member committee. The chairperson of the Committee is empowered to obtain the assistance of officers from other offices, as required.

The committee will investigate whether any irregularities or discrepancies occurred in the procurement and implementation process of the system. The Committee will submit its report within a month to the Department of Personnel and Training.

What was CBSE chief, secretary role?

CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh, IAS, before the transfer, oversaw the Board's overall functioning, including examinations, academics, affiliations, policy implementation and major reforms, while also coordinating with the Ministry of Education.

Secretary Himanshu Gupta, IAS, headed key administrative functions such as administration, finance and affiliations, and played a central role in CBSE's day-to-day operations and policy implementation across its nationwide school and examination network.
